Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) nest & egg – Northern Province Zambia

The first egg laid but usually two eggs are  laid but when hatched the smaller of the pulli is dumped from the nest as Shoebills only rear one bird at a time.

A very rare photo recorded by my dear friend Dr. Ian P. A. Manning while researching the Sitatunga and Black Lechwe in the Bangweulu Wetlands or swamps in 1974 who has handed me the rights to publish his rare slide photos.
