Heron Black (Egret) (Egretta ardesiaca) mantling – Northern Province Zambia

The Black Heron, formerly Black Egret, has a unique technique of using it’s wings to shade the sun enabling it to see its prey more clearly called mantling.  The shade may also trick the fish believing the shade is a safe area!
