Pigeon Seychelles Blue (Alectroenas pulcherrimus) endemic – Seychelles
Full SizeIt can be difficult to see the eye of the Seychelles Blue Pigeon as it is often covered with skin similar. Here the bird is yawning and the eye is closed. The Seychelles Blue Pigeon has a distinctive bright red patch of orbital skin extending from forehead to crown that looks more like a growth! The body appears black but in good light is dark blue. Interestingly the bird has muscular gizzards that break down seeds to aid digestion unlike other pigeons that pass through the seeds for distribution.
