The dotted line indicates the route our vessel took to negotiate the Northwest Passage. The main challenges were Simpson Strait of King William Island that is very narrow but Bellot Strait south of Somerset Island was so tight that  two of our vessels side by side would probably get stuck. It is these passages that would freeze up first in winter would frustrate earlier attempts to seek the Northwest Passage.
