Full SizeWas name Madagascar Squacco Heron –Sinclair but IOC classified as Malagasy Pond Heron – Endemic
The Procambarus is a self-cloning crayfish invader to Madagascar. Marbled crayfish, or Marmorkrebs, are parthenogenic members of Procambarus (Decapoda: Cambaridae), an important genus of North American crayfish; they are all females that reproduce without sex. This is the first decapod crustacean found that reproduces only this way. Their discovery in Madagascar in 2005 by University of Antananarivo biologists who noticed a strange new decapod being sold at markets near the capitol city. In 2007 Japanese researchers identified them as marmorkrebs (a German name) that were found at 37 sites around Antananarivo (Tana) at high density. They were probably introduced around 2003, perhaps from a road-building project done by foreign contractors, but then again perhaps not?
